Description
This is a virtual course is designed for healthcare professionals new to spirometry or for those who have not been performing spirometry and need an update.
The training covers the fundamentals of how to perform the test to the quality assured standards as guided by the Association of Respiratory Technology and Physiology (ARTP), including how to document results.
It is preferable that the student has a mentor following the training to work through the competency pack supplied with the training.
A competency document is included in the course to work through with a mentor following the training.
The course covers:
- Pathophysiology of lung disease
- Equipment used for measuring lung function
- Cleaning and maintenance of equipment
- How to perform spirometry to the recommended quality assured standard
- Errors and pitfalls
By the end of the course delegates will:
- Understand pre-test requirements and patient safety
- Infection control measures for equipment maintenance
- Equipment calibration / verification both technically and biologically
- CQC Requirements
- Recognise common errors when performing the test
- Understanding technical acceptability and reproducibility
- Obtain a quality assured spirometry trace, with basic interpretation
